We know from ourselves, that starting a company is no easy journey. There is more things that need to be done, than things that are done.
At the same time, revenue is small and expenses are adding up at every step of the way, being it hosting, marketing, software licenses or something else entirely.
In this situation, we do not want to add expenses to startups that are just getting starting - or even individual teams that have been going for a long time.
But, should startups and invididual teams use OKRs?
On the one hand, we believe that the utility of using OKRs, or any other goal management system, increases with the number of people using it. So, you could say, that startups and invidividual teams have less utility to use OKRs.
One the other hand, we know it from lived experience, that small teams - heck, even the alone founder - has great utility in defining goals and tracking progress weekly. It is so easy to get lost doing things that will not move your business forward.
Using OKRs to track your progress toward goals — and asking yourself each week whether what you’re to work on includes the highest-impact items — is one of the most important habits for achieving anything meaningful.
Daniel Pink puts it in his recognized book Drive this way:
“Single greatest motivator is making progress in one’s work.”
So, yes: Startup and individual teams should use OKRs.
